Pro-Democracy Politicians Forced Out in Hong Kong

The Washington Post reports that “China forced the ouster of four pro-democracy lawmakers from Hong Kong’s legislature Wednesday, triggering a mass walkout of opposition legislators and solidifying Beijing’s stranglehold on the city.”

The ousted politicians were Kenneth Leung, Alvin Yeung, Dennis Kwok, and Kwok Ka-ki. In an article on their dismissal, The New York Times stated: “The departures will reshape the city’s political landscape, which has been upended since China imposed a sweeping national security law on Hong Kong this summer that gave authorities broad powers to crack down on resistance.”

According to Barron’s magazine, “The four [lawmakers] were disqualified in line with a resolution adopted earlier in the day by China’s parliament authorizing the local government to expel any politician it deemed a threat to national security.”
