Hotline for Informants in Hong Kong

The Guardian reports that “Hong Kong police have launched a hotline for the city’s residents to inform anonymously on anyone they allege has broken a sweeping new national security law.”

According to the British newspaper, this new “system allows people to send tip-offs via video, audio files and pictures to the police.” On the first day of operation, more than 1,000 pieces of information were submitted.

Al Jazeera has noted that “rights groups have voiced concerns that the hotline will delivery another blow to free speech as Beijing tightens its control over a city where certain democratic rights and freedoms were guaranteed for at least 50 years under the terms of its return to Chinese rule in 1997.”
